Dear Friends,

As you know, our remaining troops are coming home from Iraq this week. The road has been long and difficult. While we each have our personal feelings about the war in Iraq, I feel confident saying that each of you stand proud of our men and women in uniform, and the huge sacrifices they have made.

The end of any war is a joyous occasion, but let us remember the thousands that did not come back home and their families. Tens of thousands came home, but with serious injuries. We will never ever forget! We must stand together to protect what veterans and military families have earned. Taking care of their wounds, providing them with an education, helping them transition back are responsibilities we should stand up for as Democrats and Americans. “No budget cuts for our military or their families.”

President Obama promised that he would end the Iraq war, and he successfully negotiated withdrawl by the end of 2011…just as promised. The Iraqi government that we helped to establish is now democratic.

This past July 4th, while enjoying the day at Heritage Park in Corolla, I chatted briefly with a very nice lady from Ohio. I learned that it was her first trip to the Currituck OBX, and she and her husband had their five grandchildren with them on vacation. I commented that the parents were probably enjoying the” break” just as much as the grandparents were enjoying the five grandchildren. At that moment her expression completely changed and she very sadly told me that she had lost both of her sons; both were fathers of the grandchildren. One was killed in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan. What a tremendous heartbreak this family endured. She quickly regained composure, and told me how thankful she was for her grandchildren…I told her I understood.

I’m quite sure many of you have had similar experiences. It certainly puts life in perspective. These are just a few thoughts that I wanted to share with you on this historical momentous week.

May God Bless our troops and their families.

By Adam Searing and Adam Linker

GOPers like Rep. Nelson Dollar and Speaker Thom Tillis are scrambling to deflect blame for the hundreds of millions of dollars in Medicaid cuts they made to NC’s health care program for the most vulnerable. Governor Perdue warned them in this May 27th letter that GOP Medicaid cuts were unrealistic and would result in devastation to critical Medicaid services. Then on October 27th, DHHS Secretary Lanier Cansler, a former Republican member of the General Assembly, warned GOP leaders in this letter that the cuts GOPers asked for were now going to result in exactly that – elimination of services that will hurt thousands of people.

What does this mean? Here’s Sarah Gamble, a woman who has more integrity, compassion and dedication than any ten people you care to name. She also gets help from Medicaid to care for Cameron:

One final thought. What if Sarah Gamble was the Speaker of the NC House or the Chair of the Health and Human Services budget committee?
